NBC Sports California announced Tuesday they're hiring Chris Caray as a play-by-play announcer for the Oakland A's this season. Caray will join Jenny Cavnar, the A's new primary play-by-play voice, and returning color commentator Dallas Braden in the booth.
Cavnar, who is the first woman to be the primary voice for an MLB team, will call play-by-play for about 95 games this season. Caray will be responsible for about 65 games, according to NBCUniversal Vice President of Communications Brian Potter.
“Ever since I was a 12-year-old kid, I dreamed of becoming a Major League broadcaster,” Caray said in a statement. “Now, I’m thrilled that that dream has come true. I’m honored and proud to join a franchise with the rich history of the Oakland A’s, and I can’t wait to grow along with this young, exciting team and my new partners with NBC Sports California, Jenny Cavnar and Dallas Braden.”
Prior to joining the A's booth, Caray worked with his twin brother, Stefan, as the play-by-play voice of the Amarillo Sod Poodles, the Arizona Diamondbacks' Double-A affiliate. They began that job while still in college at the University of Georgia – where Chris directed the university's student-run radio, WUOG – and have since graduated.

Sports broadcasting is in Chris Caray's blood
NBC's newest hire is a fourth-generation MLB broadcaster. He follows the footsteps of his father, Chip, current St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster; grandfather, Skip, former Atlanta Braves broadcaster; and great-grandfather and baseball broadcasting icon Harry Caray.
Harry's career spanned six decades – 1945-1997 – and five MLB teams: the St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Browns (now the Baltimore Orioles), the A's, the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs.
